In the spring of 1920, Li Dazhao, who was already the father of three children, moved into No. 24 Wenhua Hutong in Xicheng District, Beijing. He walked to and from work every day, never smoked, seldom drank, sometimes had his own steamed buns of flour or corn, together with pickles, and water for lunch. He wasn’t particular about food or clothing, and he felt satisfied to make ends meet in his family. At that time, Li Dazhao was a professor and library director at Peking University, and also a professor at other four universities, including the Women’s Higher Normal University, with a monthly income of more than 200 silver dollars. However, before he stepped out of Peking University every month, the money had already gone. Nearly two-thirds of his monthly income was used as party membership dues and about 80 silver dollars was donated to help patriotic students in need.
